What is meditation?

Meditation is a journey of self-discovery. It is the art of going beyond the busy, anxious mind and experiencing the peace and joy of the inner self.

Occasionally we catch a glimpse of this inner peace and contentment— perhaps when watching a beautiful sunset or listening to the rhythm of the waves by the seashore—but more often this inner self lies dormant, buried beneath the hurry and worry of daily life.

But where is this inner self and how can we awaken it? Most of us, when referring to ourselves, quite naturally point to a place in the middle of the chest. This place is the doorway to what we call the spiritual heart, or the heart centre. And it is here that we begin the journey of self-discovery.

At first, we may encounter various obstacles that prevent us from focusing on this inner space. Sometimes, the obstacles are outer distractions. However, the primary obstacles are tension in the body, emotional agitation, and the constant flurry of thoughts racing around our mind.

Consequently, we begin the meditative journey with simple relaxation and concentration exercises—such as focusing on the breath or on inspiring objects such as flowers and candles, using mantras, chanting, singing and guided visualizations. These exercises enable us to relax the body, calm the emotions, still the mind and enter into the serene silence of meditation. The peace and spontaneous joy contained within our heart can come to the fore and permeate our entire being.

Over time, the practice of meditation allows us to gain control of our own thoughts and feelings, to bring a higher sense of purpose to our lives and to discover a new sense of who we really are.
